Do you have any suggestions of a nice, free theme, for someone who doesn't have an idea what he's doing? A simple theme, that still looks nice is what I'm looking for.

Definitely look at the show notes for previous episodes of WordCast. We've got some great theme links there.

You might want to wait for a little longer as Brian Gardner is going Open Source with his themes (get some previews on his blog). I'm sure you'll find a theme that fits your needs which will be easy to adapt.
Otherwise, take a look a the Sandbox theme. Good code and easy to adapt only using CSS.

Well, that was a good idea, but all of the themes discussed on the show seem too complex for a complete beginner.

Ahh you're a complete beginner eh?
The thing is, most of the themes have common elements that don't deviate too much away from it so all themes are pretty much the same sans differing design elements or one or two plugins that certain theme authors have integrated into the theme.
Try K2 or the sandbox theme. They're nice and easy.

Any links to the K2 theme?

@Thlowe
You might want to take a look at templatr. I didn't use it myself but seems to work quite well for a standart personalized WP Theme.
If you wanna do it all by yourself and want to go with a “minimalistic” version take a look at a tutorial by SP (former owner of WPDesigner).

I think I'll stick with K2 for the moment.

I'm a big fan of K2 as well. It's like a good blog theme done better, though it goes a bit overboard with too many features.

I'm not a huge fan of K2. It sure is a good theme but as you mentioned it goes overboard with features and that makes it kind of hard to adapt to your needs.
But if you're just looking for something that works well together with WP, it's a go.

Wow…I just gave Alex Kings' Carrington Theme a look. It's a super functional theme with a lot of high quality options that you can get for free.
Dougal Campell's post about themes for developers was in the Dashboard and feature a coupe of other great themes.
I guess all those theme's are of great quality and clean code. It might take a while for a not so experienced coder as myself to understand the whole “system” that's behind those themes but I think those are great templates for a fresh start.
I'm not 100% sure yet but I'll probably going to give Alex's Carrington theme a go for my new personal blog which I hope will be more up to date and nicer looking soon.

I really like the direction the WP community is taking with all these great new things that are coming out. And they're all free.
Another feather in the cap for Matt Mullenweg.

I think this is amazing. For all those who want to grap some ideas for their theme design check out the new WP Feature called Showcase.
WordPress features some of the most interesting WP Users.

The Journalized Theme Version 2 looks like an amazing theme to me and it's already WP 2.7 ready.

I actually had a look at them the other day. They're good, especially with the option with columns and what-not… but design-wise they haven't really struck a chord with me… yet.
